WORKPLACE WELLNESS: SOLVE
Business continues to be ever more challenging. Markets are unforgiving. Risks are increasing. Competition is intensifying. Costs are rising. Pressure is growing. Customers are demanding. Work is stressing. Business accepts those challenges. It works smarter. It expects more. It physically picks up the pace. It does more with less.
Workers are asked to step up to the challenge. They work harder. They work longer. They physically wear out and sometimes breakdown.
Business bets on its people. It is the human asset that makes important things happen – strategy, innovation, production, growth, profitability. It is an asset that requires investment and maintenance.
Hard working people, like equipment, physically wear down over time. Injury and illness is a common result. Comfort is compromised. Performance is impeded. Health situations deteriorate. Expensive medical services are engaged. Lost time impacts productivity.
Occupational safety and health initiatives have created a safer workplace with fewer acute trauma injuries over the past 30 years. Appropriate medical treatment speeds recovery and reduces complications. While acute trauma continues to occur, the greater problem in most workplaces today is cumulative trauma.
Cumulative trauma arrives quietly, progresses subtly, and remains obscure. It evolves in drivers’ seats, on assembly lines, at keyboards, on construction sites, and at board tables. The earliest signs may be found in unspoken discomfort and unmeasured performance. Cost is a function of when it is detected and solved. Sooner is better.
Employers are constantly challenged by the demand to produce more goods and services, of better quality, for less cost, with greater profits in an environment of ever increasing global competition.
It has been said that, “People are a company’s most valuable asset.” At SOLVE we would disagree. We believe that, “Loyal, healthy, productive people are a company’s most valuable assets.” It is with that understanding that SOLVE brings value to the workplace. This is the context in which work and non-work related injuries and illnesses occur. While the incidence of worker compensation cases have decreased over the last 3 decades the associated expenses have increased, particularly those that are medically related. The decrease in cases can be attributed primarily to the reduction of traumatic injuries due to better occupational safety requirements and programs. Today the focus and expense has shifted from traumatic injuries to cumulative trauma illnesses involving the arm, wrist, hand, back, and neck. Such conditions require new understandings, strategies, and tools that go beyond traditional occupational safety and health.
The net result is seen in enhanced productivity, reduced risk, fewer recordable injuries/illnesses, lower premiums; less lost time, greater employee morale, and improved profitability. Every SOLVE engagement incorporates a proven system and responsive service for right-sized interventions and reliable results.
