Regional Interdependence

Transcript

Welcome to the Health Plus Minute, I’m Michael Kane.

Joint and muscle injuries are as common as the cold. Financial costs for these injuries rival those of cancer and heart disease.

The body is a complex system. Not randomly organized, but intimately connected. Each link crucial for the function of the whole.

The classic medical model for injury is not adequate for the management of musculoskeletal complaints. The model forces us to create diagnostic labels…knee strain, lumbago, bursitis. The system obliges us to accept the diagnosis as both cause and effect. But, effect (your symptoms) and the causes are often distant cousins.

Regional interdependence is a concept we embrace.. Structural abnormalities, weakness, poor muscle control and loss of motion in distant regions of the body can contribute to, or be associated with, the primary complaint.

Back pain is a key example. Research shows that many patients with low back pain have problems with their hips, feet or thoracic spine.

The key to treatment then is for the clinician to assess and find the relevant relationships between regions so we can treat not only your symptoms, but causes and compensations as well.

That way you get better and stay better.
