Cross Training

Transcript

Welcome to the Health Plus Minute, I’ve been faithfully committed to working out my whole life. We recently bought a house that has a swimming pool and I decided to add swimming laps to my program. The first time I made it just two laps before I had to stop in exhaustion. I thought I was in good shape. It was a shock and a reminder about the importance of cross-training. This is what happens when we mix up the concept of fitness with a single exercise activity or you train for one sport. If your exercise is always the same, you run the risk of boredom, overuse injuries, and stale performance. Cross-training means altering your workout routine. For great functional fitness, it means changing the modality of exercise, a machine versus pulleys, versus free weights, the type of exercise or the frequency, duration, intensity of your program. Altering how you exercise can help your muscles recover faster, add spice to your routine, and train your nervous system to wire together more efficiently. Posture, balance, core control, strength, flexibility, cardio fitness, and power are all qualities that need to be tuned. ProMotion Physical Therapy and Functional Fitness. Be connected. Be moved.
